Summertime Burgers from Memoirs of a Delicious Life
Celebrate National Barbecue Month AND National Hamburger Month in May with a mouthwatering grilled hamburger recipe
Ingredients:
- 3 pounds lean ground beef (the best beef makes the best hamburgers)
- 1 cup chopped yellow onion
- ½ cup chopped red bell pepper
- 2 egg whites
- 4 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 4 tablespoons seasoned bread crumbs (we use Progresso’s Garlic and Herb)
- 2 tablespoons chili sauce (we use Heinz)
- 1 teaspoon crushed garlic
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic salt (we use Lawry’s)
- 4-plus ounces sharp Cheddar cheese (or your favorite cheese)
Directions:
Put all the ingredients except the cheese in a large bowl and mix well with a large fork or your hands. Divide the beef mixture into 8 equal portions, and then divide each portion in half and shape 8 of these portions into thin patties.
Cut the cheese into 8 slices to fit the centers of the patties and place 1 slice on each of the flattened patties.
Flatten the remaining 8 portions of the beef mixture and place one on top of the cheese on each patty. Gently push them together on the tops and sides to seal them. Finish the seals of each burger in the palms of your hands, shaping each one into a nice circle about 4 inches in diameter and ¾ to 1 inch thick and place it on wax paper. Repeat with the remaining 7 burgers.
Grill the burgers to your desired doneness and serve with your favorite fixings.
Yield: 8 burgers
Tip: If making these burgers with the cheese in the centers is more effort than you want for a relaxed summer meal, then just shape the beef into eight patties and cook, melting the cheese on top.
