Cookbooks and an open recipe spread

Cookbook Publishing

A great cookbook is more than a collection of recipes. It brings together clear writing, inviting photography, thoughtful design, and careful production to create a book people want to cook from, share, and keep.

Cookbooks have been part of Callawind’s story from the beginning. Our first title, Rise & Dine: Savory Secrets from America’s Bed & Breakfast Inns, became a North American bestseller, and we have since worked with chefs, food writers, restaurants, organizations, fundraising groups, and independent authors to create cookbooks for retail and specialty markets.

Our cookbook publishing experience includes the Taste Canada Award-winning Open Kitchen and The Inn Chef by Food Network TV chef Michael Smith; The Spice Is Right by award-winning food writer Monica Bhide; and My Favorite Herb, featuring recipes from celebrated chefs including Alice Waters and Emeril Lagasse. Callawind-made cookbooks have received recognition from major media including The New York Times, Gourmet, Canadian Living, Food Network, and Canada AM.

Cookbooks have unique editorial, design, and production requirements. Recipes need to be clear and consistent, layouts need to be attractive and easy to follow, photography needs to reproduce beautifully, and choices about paper, binding, finishes, and printing can have a major impact on the finished book.

Callawind can help with the complete process or the individual services your project needs, including editing, design and layout, photo consulting, indexing, printing, project management, and marketing and distribution consulting.

Callawind art book examples

Art & Museum Book Publishing

Some books are as much visual objects as they are publications. Art books, museum publications, exhibition catalogues, photography books, and other image-rich projects require a particularly careful approach to design, color reproduction, paper, printing, and binding.

Callawind has worked with museums, galleries, artists, photographers, cultural organizations, and other institutions to produce beautifully designed books where the quality of the finished object matters.

We understand how to balance images and text while giving the work itself room to shine. Projects can range from elegant softcover publications to substantial hardcover books produced with specialty papers, finishes, and binding techniques.

Our experience includes award-winning museum publications as well as Humans of St. Louis, an ambitious photographic portrait and storytelling project documenting the people of St. Louis through striking photography and personal stories.

Callawind can provide cover and interior design, image preparation and color management, printing, specialty production, and complete project management from initial files through delivery of the finished books.

Selection of specialty books

Specialty Book Publishing

Not every book fits neatly into a category—and some of the most interesting publishing projects don’t.

Over more than 30 years, Callawind has produced a wide variety of books for independent authors, professionals, businesses, and organizations. Our experience includes self-help and how-to books, business books, poetry collections, educational titles, commemorative books, and other specialty publications.

Whatever the subject, the same principles apply: the content should be professionally presented, the design should suit the book and its audience, and the printing and production choices should support the quality and purpose of the finished publication.

We can work with you from manuscript through finished book or provide only the individual services you need, including editing, design and layout, photo consulting, indexing, printing, project management, and marketing and distribution consulting.

Because every project is different, we don’t use pre-set publishing packages. Tell us what you’re creating and where you are in the process, and we’ll help you determine the right approach for your book.
